You’re in the Picture
I am curious, how many of you enjoy having your picture taken? Most of us run from a camera?s flash like a cat fleeing a bath. Pictures. They remind us of what we have not accomplished ? for example, the few pounds we resolved to lose in January are still there in the picture! They remind us how our bellies are going down and our hairlines are going up. Some people don?t like pictures getting taken of them! However, this morning, we?re going to look at some snapshots that Matthew took of some people at the cross of Christ. And all of you are in one of these three pictures.
No one escapes these snapshots. As we look through this photo album of the cross ? we will look for your face in one of the crowds at the cross. Continue reading
On the Road…Again!
Just about everyone I know loves a good story. Well, have I got a story for you!
To tell it best I need you to pick up a Bible and look at Luke 24. If your neighbor doesn?t have a Bible will you share yours with them?
For the past several Sundays we have been learning about the last week of Jesus? life. We learned that on Thursday night he and his 12 closest followers celebrated the Jewish Passover in Jerusalem. Then later that night, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. A mob of people interrupt Jesus and arrest him. Through the night and into the early hours of the morning Jesus is given a speedy and unfair trial. He is sentenced to death by the Roman official Pontius Pilate and on Friday morning he is nailed to a cross. By noon on Friday Jesus is dead. He is buried in a tomb with a stone rolled in front of the entrance and Roman guards stationed there. But early Sunday morning some women who were followers of Jesus went to the tomb and found it empty. Continue reading
On the Cross
Good Friday has always been a significant day in the life of a Christian. It is significant of course because of the event that it represents – the crucifixion of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. No doubt for those early disciples of Christ over 2000 years ago there was nothing “good” about this day at all. For them the day was about defeat, about incredible despair, and fear. I don’t think we have the slightest clue how they must have felt during the events leading up to Jesus’ awful agony in a very barbaric and cruel punishment. Those of us who have seen the movie “The Passion of the Christ” are left with some powerful images that perhaps grasp in part what it must have been like for those close to Jesus and Jesus Himself on that day. But in reality, those images – while haunting – really don’t affect us the same as the actual event did for those disciples. You see, as Christians we approach Friday with the knowledge of Easter morning. We know that Christ’s work on the cross was not about defeat but about victory. It was not about loss but about gain. His sacrifice on the cross was necessary for the victory of his resurrection. Continue reading
He is one of Us?
One of the most important observations one can make about humanity is that we are prone to making mistakes. You?re probably familiar with the old proverb that states, “To err is human”. Certainly I am sure that all of us have had our share of “messing up”, or “guessing things wrong”, or just plain stupidity. Indeed, because of this inherent trait of our existence we tend to immediately frown with disdain or disbelief upon someone making the claim that they are perfect and that they never do anything wrong!
Truthfully we do tend to affirm a person?s humanity precisely when he or she makes a mistake. Mistakes and blunders bring us back down to earth – to the realm of mere mortals. But this brings us to a bit of a problem?what do we do with Jesus? He didn?t make any mistakes.
The Bible says that everyone has sinned and has fallen short of God?s glorious perfection. Everyone that is, except for Jesus. Jesus never sinned. What do we do with that? Continue reading

“Sir, Your Table is Ready”
The wonderful significance of the table lies within the nature of something called a “covenant.” Covenant is a major theme throughout the pages of the Bible. Covenant drives the story of God?s efforts to save people throughout all history. Covenant is a word for an agreement or treaty of sorts. In the Bible, covenants are written by God and offered to people. Continue reading
